Title: Postnatal development of Homer 1a expression in the hippocampus
Abstract: Homer 1a (H1a) is involved in multiple forms of synaptic plasticity and exhibits a postnatal increase in the rat forebrain. I evaluated the hippocampal expression of H1a at different postnatal ages (P3, P5, P7, P9, P15, P19, P23, P35 and adult) in both home cage and maximal electroconvulsive shock (MECS) groups. Large scale imaging and confocal scanning were used to evaluate the number of cells that express H1a and the intra nuclear foci (INF) characteristics. H1a positive cells are presented from P3 in DS, CA1 and CA3. Analysis from the large scale images shows that H1a expression increases during the third week of life. Regional analysis in the hippocampus shows that the number of H1a positive cells in CA1, CA3 and DS reaches adult levels during the second week of life in the MECS group. However, INF changes in volume and intensity across postnatal development. Laminar maturation of the dentate gyrus was observed; H1a positive cells appear in the outer layer of the granular cells at the beginning of postnatal development moving towards the inner layer later on. In summary, although there is a general increase in H1a expression around the third week of life, each region exhibits a unique trend. Interestingly, INF changes in size and intensity across postnatal development were observed.

Title: Alteration of neural dynamics in the medial prefrontal cortex by an NMDAR antagonist
Abstract: I will present ongoing analysis of neural recordings from the medial prefrontal cortex in the NMDA antagonist model of schizophrenia. The analysis indicates that the neural dynamics are disturbed by the systemic injection of the potent NMDAR antagonist MK801 (0.2 mg/kg) by reducing the synchronization of neural firing with the firing of other neurons. To our knowledge, such desynchronization of local cortical networks has not been previously reported in this model of schizophrenia, and may represent a signature of cortical misfiring that may emerge in other models of the disease.

Title: Reactivation of multiple assemblies in hippocampus and prefrontal cortex
Abstract: In resting or sleep periods following a task, many neurons in various parts of the brain become activated again, often with firing patterns similar to those that occurred during a task before sleep. This reactivation is thought to play an important role in the process of memory consolidation. Using long-term chronic recordings from the rat medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and area CA1 of the hippocampus (HC), we show that different subgroups of neurons reactivate after the novel behavior task at different times. Our analysis also indicates that the changes induced in those neuron pairs are maintained hours after the task in HC but not in the mPFC. These results suggest that reactivation of novel experience in HC could be attributed mainly to modifications of the synapses within the network while reactivation in the mPFC could be driven by external inputs.

Title: A study of cortical sensory coding - Evoked activity patterns influence subsequent spontaneous activity
Abstract: Even though cortical responses have been extensively studied by manipulating sensory stimulation, the way in which the cortex encodes sensory information for further processing still needs to be completely understood. In this talk Edgar will present evidence to show that patterns of evoked activity is sensory cortex influence subsequent spontaneous activity and some characteristics of such patterns.

Title: Effort-Based Decision Making and Rat ACC: Pilot Results and Future Directions
Abstract: Pilot results on a ramp effort task showed that rats with temporary inactivation of ACC were not impaired in effort-based decision making compared to previous studies using permanent lesions (Walton et al., 2002). Rats with permanent lesions showed some impairment on the task. On a close replication of the Walton et al., 2002 task, rats with temporary inactivation also showed no impairment. Results on the lever effort and courage tasks are inconclusive as of now. Future directions may involve a full replication of Walton et al., 2002 with temporary inactivation as well as a full study with permanent lesions to ACC on the ramp effort task.
